National BBQ Day - Grilling Safety
5/12/2021 (Permalink)
Summer weather means it's time to break out the grill! May 16th is National BBQ Day.
Grilling safely is a must this summer. According to the National Fire Protection Association, between 2014 and 2018, fire departments went to an annual average of 8,900 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbeques including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outside or unclassified fires. Gas grills contribute to a higher number of fires than charcoal grills.
Here are some grilling fire safety tips:
- Grills should be placed well away from home/deck railings, fences, and out from under eaves and branches
- Check out the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) website for a simple test to test your grill for gas leaks and a free safety tip sheet
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from grills and trays below grills
- Never leave your grill unattended, especially with children around
