Fire Prevention Week is October 3-9, 2021

The theme this year is Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety. What is that sound you hear from your smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector? Is it a beep? A chirp? Knowing what the sounds mean can save your life. Make sure everyone in your home understands the sounds of the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and how to respond.

What Is Your Alarm Telling You?

SMOKE ALARMS

  • Continued set of 3 loud beeps means smoke or fire. GET OUT, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single 'chirp' every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and needs to be changed.
  • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.

CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) ALARMS

  • Continuous set of 4 loud beeps means carbon monoxide is present in your home. Go outside, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be replaced.
  • CO alarms also have 'end of life' sounds that vary by manufacturer. This means it's time to get a new carbon monoxide detector.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.

Pay attention to the sounds you hear and make sure your alarms are working properly. Take action if necessary - better safe than sorry. If something does happen and you have smoke or fire damage in your home, SERVPRO of Benton, Jasper, Newton & Southern Lake Counties is available 24/7 to help.
